My Practices of Intention {A Manifesto}

Well, I am happy to say that I finished my 31 days series before the calendar rolled over to 2013. So what if it took me three months. (sigh) I am glad that I finished what I started. Really, it was more to me than following through on something I set out to do. Writing the series really helped me define the areas of my life that I want to live with intention as well as opened my eyes to how much I really need to walk in His grace. So as a little tribute 2012, I thought I'd write a … [Read more...]

When You Grow Weary Of Intention

I’ll have to be honest with you…sometimes I just want to throw intention out the window. Sometimes I get tired of goals and to-do lists. I get tired of thinking and planning. Sometimes I wish for a care-free life where everything just falls into place without me making any effort. You know that feeling you get when you are on vacation. You stay up late, sleep in, eat too much, spend money. You wish it could go on forever. But it can’t. Life awaits. Laundry. Grocery Shopping. … [Read more...]

Embrace Your Story

I have always seen my life as sort of like a board game in which I am constantly sending myself back to GO. GO brings a fresh start, a clean slate. I can try once again to do it right, to do it perfectly. But I never make it very far around the board, because no matter how hard I try, I keep turning over cards of flaws and imperfections that send me back at least 3 spaces, if not back to the very beginning. When I was younger, I thought that I would eventually reach a certain age in … [Read more...]

Count Your Blessings

One of my all time favorite Christmas songs is a song that Bing Crosby sings in White Christmas called Count Your Blessings.  (My favorite version is sung by Diana Krall and you can listen to it here.) When I'm worried and I can't sleep I count my blessings instead of sheep And I fall asleep counting my blessings When my bank roll is getting small I think of when I had none at all And I fall asleep counting my blessings Whenever this song comes up on my playlist, I pause and smile as … [Read more...]

When Our Plans Fall Apart

I met the beautiful Jennifer Kindle of The Kindle Crew at Allume this year, and I don't know that I have ever met someone that I have SO MUCH in common with! I wish I could move her and her family from Texas to Atlanta so we could hang out all the time. She has four gorgeous kids and her heart and passion toward motherhood are such an inspiration to me. I asked her to share her thoughts today on how she is living where intention meets grace this Christmas season. Her words truly blessed me and I … [Read more...]

Grace Extended

As I am approaching the end of my 31 days series on cultivating a life of intention and grace, all of my words up until now would mean nothing if I failed to write about taking this same grace that I am learning to show myself and extend it to others. As a perfectionist, this isn’t something that comes easy to me. Because I hold myself up to high and generally unrealistic standards, I tend to hold others up to those same standards right alongside me. As I am trying to be intentional about … [Read more...]

The Comparison Trap

In her book Daring Greatly, Brene Brown talks about the two biggest areas that women feel insecure being 1) in our appearance and 2) in the kind of mothers we are. And because of this, these are the two areas where people will usually judge or insult a woman first. And when I say people, I mean other women. And when I say other women, I mean me. “Can you believe that haircut? What was she thinking?” “I can’t believe she doesn’t have her kids dressed warmer. She’s just asking for them to … [Read more...]

Rise Up

Have you ever been talking to someone and you are very careful about what you say because of a hardship that they have experienced? Perhaps it is a friend who is divorced, so you try not to mention your husband too often. Perhaps it is someone who has suffered a pregnancy loss or struggles with infertility, so you are careful with what you say about your own children. You get the picture. A few months ago I realized that I do the very same thing with God. If I am talking to a … [Read more...]

Praying For Our Children

Crafts, baking, read-alouds, play groups, homemade gifts, special celebrations, and all of the other things on our “be a better Mommy” to-do list, pale in comparison to the greatest thing that we can do for our children, and that is to pray for them. I believe there is power in prayer and that the prayers we pray over our children are monumental in shaping the course of their lives. “You’ll never be a perfect parent, but you can be a praying parent. Prayer is your highest privilege as a … [Read more...]
