A couple of weeks ago, I posted about starting Tot School with Buddy. I wanted to look more into the Charlotte Mason approach, because that is what a lot of mom’s with similar parenting styles to mine are using. I found this great blog series that does a fantastic job of explaining the following four preschool educational styles: Charlotte Mason, Montessori, Waldorf and Reggio-Inspired.
It is really interesting to me that the one I love the most is Waldorf, closely followed by Reggio-Inspired (which resembles Project Based Learning or what some call “Unschooling”.) I would have thought I’d be a Montessori/Mason mom. There are things I like about those two methods, but I just “get” the philosophies of the Waldorf and “Unschooling” so much better. To each his own.
This discovery has sent me into a whirlwind of reading and research on the two theories. I know that Buddy has only just turned two, but these approaches are more than just ideas on formal education. They are very deep, well thought out and researched theories of early childhood development. From the type of toys they play with, to what they eat and even what they wear. I know that I could just forget that I was never exposed to these ideas, and go with the popular mainstream approach to raising and educating my children. But that’s just not who I am.
As I continue to read and research the Waldorf and “Unschooling” theories, I will share my thoughts and discoveries with you. I will also share how I plan to combine elements of these philosophies with my Christian beliefs and parenting style.
